THE STAR IS BORN

“Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.” – Matthew 2:2

Read First: Matthew 2:2-11; Luke 2:34

When the wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem asking about the location of the newly born King of the Jews, their inquiry sparked the indignation of the Jewish leadership and the passive-aggressive rage of a jealous king. On one hand, the bigoted pride of the religious leaders could not acknowledge or deal with the fact that the God of heaven had by-passed the “learned” men belonging to their prestigious, self-righteous establishments to reveal the prophesied hope of the ages to uncircumcised Gentiles. On the other hand, the crafty, but very insecure, king Herod felt quite threatened by the report that a king was born right “under his nose” and he was not told about it.

What both Herod and the Jewish leaders did not know was that this child, who was born a King, was not only destined to be the Star of all stars, but also one whose presence will evoke open opposition and influence the destiny of many. At His formal dedication, devout Simeon said to Mary: “Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against” (Luke 2:34). Jesus Christ was manifested to draw a verdict from every man, for or against Him. Some did it openly, while many did it privately. The same is still true of everyone today.

Additionally, what the wise men assumed to be a star was not really a star. As they followed it, they discovered that it was moving with them until it rested over the place where baby Jesus lay quietly in a manger (Matthew 2:9, 10). What these eastern magi saw was the guiding light provided by a company of bright and shining angels, who appeared and sang to the shepherds after the wise men departed.

However, the real Star was lying in the manger, in the company of His parents and animals in the stable. He is the Star of Jacob (Numbers 24:17), the hope of Israel (Jeremiah 14:8; 17:3), and the Savior of the world (John 3:16). He is the bright morning Star that gladdens the heart (2 Peter 1:19), and the Sun of Righteousness who rises with healing in His wings (Malachi 4:2).

Have you seen the Star? As you respond to His presence in worship, may He shine in your heart, filling you with light, hope, peace and joy in the coming years.
